When Should I Sign Up For Medigap In Missouri?

Medigap is a great way to cover important Medicare costs, but when should you sign up in Missouri?

How Medigap Enrollment Works in Missouri

Medigap enrollment works essentially the same in Missouri as anywhere in the United States. The Missouri Department of Insurance offers a Missouri Medigap Shopping Guide that explains the basics of Medigap that you need to know.

First, you need to know the plans you have to choose from — plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. When it comes to signing up, you should also know who is eligible. Anyone eligible for and enrolled in Medicare can sign up for a Medigap plan, though there are opportune times to do so.

The Best Time To Sign Up

You can enroll in a Medigap plan during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is a six-month period that starts once you’re enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and B) and are 65.

During this period, you can enroll in any Medigap plan of your choice. You can start this process by contacting the Missouri Social Security department, or by discussing your options with a quality Medicare agency like Secure Insurance Group.

What To Do After Open Enrollment

Once these 6 months pass, what happens? Medigap enrollment will look a bit different. You’ll still be eligible, but your options may be more limited.

Once the open enrollment period ends, Medigap providers are allowed to determine your eligibility based on your health. If you have serious health concerns, or are older than 70-75 years old, you may not be eligible for all or any Medigap plans, or your premiums may be higher.

However, this isn’t always the case. There are exceptions that allow you to enroll in or change your Medigap plan at any time regardless of your age or health. This applies to you if:

  • You’ve moved out of your plan’s coverage area while in a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare SELECT Plan.
  • Your existing Medicare Advantage Plan leaves Medicare coverage.
  • You’re transitioning from employee health insurance to Medicare after age 65.
  • You have a trial right period.
  • Your coverage ends through no fault of your own.
